There have been a lot of reports about people who woke up in this supposedly luxurious rooms with several welt and red itchy spots on their body. There are particularly growing reports of bed bug infestation in hotels in New York City, Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Many guest of these hotels relate how they leave a hotel with bites all over the body in some of these states.
We captured a report from a woman who stayed at the super 8 on the east side of Morristown TN. She narrated “My fiance woke up the next morning with about 6 bites and I had 2. He had to go to the hospital because he was having a reaction to the bites. We informed hotel management, who sent up someone to “check” the rooms. All they did was check the mattress and change the sheets, so when I got back to the
room. I checked it myself. I found shells and dead bugs under the bed, so they swapped us to another room.”
As if that were not enough, a popular singer (Lauren Hildebrant) complained that she left her hotel room in Manhattan City with itchy, painful bites after paying $500 for a night in the hotel.
This is suppose to be a place where travellers/visitors and guest came to rest/sleep over with peace of mind. The tide has changed; even five star hotels are not spared of invasion by these gritty insects. If you are going to visit a hotel, you need to make sure you don’t get infested because it is costly (often leading to stress, financial distress) if they follow you home. “Bed bugs are fairly cosmopolitan.”
Bed Bugs Hotels – How Do Hotels Make Sure Their Rooms Isn’t Infested?
Most times, hotel management will tell you what they think about their rooms which might not always be the case. Imaging getting to a hotel. The person at the desk assures you that their rooms are top of the class and you are assured of a delightful stay. And when you get to your room, you decided to check on your bed.
To your surprise, you find live bugs dancing and trooping around the bed in their full glory. I know that they are nocturnal insects, but it takes only a few seconds to unravel the presence of these insects. For instance pulling up the bed, checking the seams and bed skirts.
As mentioned elsewhere, this problem is not totally the hotel management’s fault. Because some of their guests might bring in bed bugs; so it’s not always the hotel’s sanitation issue.
Meanwhile, always prepare for the worst because no amount of cleanliness can prevent these insects from getting into a hotel. It doesn’t matter whether it is high-class hotel or a cheap one in your neighbourhood.

But what about sleeping on the bed if you are in a hotel? This takes us to the next section…
Bed Bugs Hotels – So What Can You Do to Make Sure You Don’t Get Infested When Visiting A Hotel?
Before you lodge into a hotel, make sure you give the room a thorough search for bed bug infestation.
And how do you do that?
The first thing you need to do is examine the bed. Pull the bed up and check beneath it; is there any sign of bed bugs? Look around the bed, check the mattresses as well as the bed sheets. Sign that these insects are present are blood stain (from previous bites), dark spots (their faeces), dead bugs, their eggs and possibly exoskeletons (shells) from molting of the insects.
Next thing you need to do is to check the room, seams of chairs and couch, bed skirts and wall hangings. They can crawl up the wall and hide behind wallpapers, calender leaf and mirror hung in the room.
Also keep your luggage off the floor. If you have a plastic sheet, you can place your luggage in there and they won’t be able to get to it. Remember that luggage and furniture are “effective agents and carriers of bed bugs”
Check hotel reviews online to see whether a customer has encounter bugs with the hotel you want to lodge into.
Draw out your plastic sheet and place your luggage in it. They cant get into it once it is sealed up.(We have said this before and we are repeating it here. If you don’t have, please get one as soon as you can. It will save you from all the stress and financial distress)
It also helps if you politely ask the receptionist at the desk about their rooms. It is possible that you may not get the truth from here, but you will capitalize on what they tell you here later if anything happens. This works well if you decide that you want your money refunded if the hotel room isn’t what you want.
Don’t bother about the bathroom and latrine. “Bedbugs are least likely to be found in the bathroom. They don’t like the tile floors and there aren’t as many hiding places. They like to be closer to where people may be sleeping.” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association.
Although, you can get rid of bed bugs yourself, it is not advisable that you do that in a hotel. If a hotel is infested with bed bugs, ask for a change of room. Make sure you check the next one as you did before. If you can’t get a decent room, get your money refunded and find another hotel that is suitable.
